Bird Box Help Guide
A bird box might seem to be a simple little box but some though is needed to ensure that your bird box is actually suitable for our feathered friends.
What Type Of Bird Box?
A bird box is typically inexpensive, just bare in mind these factors:
- Novelty shaped boxes are generally a bad idea
- Bright colours can attract predators
- Metal roofing can make the box too hot for the birds inside
- Wood or woodcrete offers the best insulation – avoid metal and plastic
- Perches aren’t needed and can assist unwelcome predators
Where To Put Your Bird Box?
Just about all small yards and gardens (plus many other locations of course) can support a bird box. Here a couple of points to consider:
- Place the box at least 1.5m from the ground with a clear flight path
- Make sure the box is inaccessible to predators
- Position your box away from the prevailing westerly wind, rain and strong sunlight
- Position the box in a place were you can see and enjoy watching the birds using it
