Bird Box Help Guide

A bird box might seem to be a simple little box but some though is needed to ensure that your bird box is actually suitable for our feathered friends.

What Type Of Bird Box?

A bird box is typically inexpensive, just bare in mind these factors:

  1. Novelty shaped boxes are generally a bad idea
  2. Bright colours can attract predators
  3. Metal roofing can make the box too hot for the birds inside
  4. Wood or woodcrete offers the best insulation – avoid metal and plastic
  5. Perches aren’t needed and can assist unwelcome predators

Where To Put Your Bird Box?

Just about all small yards and gardens (plus many other locations of course) can support a bird box. Here a couple of points to consider:

  1. Place the box at least 1.5m from the ground with a clear flight path
  2. Make sure the box is inaccessible to predators
  3. Position your box away from the prevailing westerly wind, rain and strong sunlight
  4. Position the box in a place were you can see and enjoy watching the birds using it
